Christian Origins of Halloween

Our very own Augustine Thompson, OP wrote a short article on the origins of Halloween. This is to counter all those Christians who would turn it into a pagan festival.

If you are interested in the Dominican Rite especially on the feast of All Soul's you can look at this website provided by Augustine Thompson, OP

Newman's Own

Why is Newman so important? Why are Newman Centers named after him, even before he was considered for sainthood? In the mid―to late―nineteenth century, Catholics began attending secular, rather than Catholic universities in larger numbers. In many of these institutions they encountered environments hostile to Catholicism. In an attempt to balance their intellectual lives with their faith lives, students began informally gathering with local clergy and religious and Catholic professors. In 1892 at the University of Pennsylvania, one such group formed a club named after John Henry Newman, a recently deceased Cardinal of the church who had written essays on the idea of a University and on the Christian conscience.

Here is Pope Benedict XVI on Newman: It is the truth revealed through Scripture and Tradition and articulated by the Church’s Magisterium that sets us free. Cardinal Newman realised this, and he left us an outstanding example of faithfulness to revealed truth by following that “kindly light” wherever it led him, even at considerable personal cost. Great writers and communicators of his stature and integrity are needed in the Church today, and it is my hope that devotion to him will inspire many to follow in his footsteps. Dominican General Chapter

Last Chapter in Bogotá, Colombia

Next week Dominicans from around the world will be gathering into a General Chapter to amend our legislation and vote for a new Master General, our head guy in Rome. The Dominicans going to this particular Chapter which is held every three years are the Provincials and elected delegates. This is the big one which happens every nine years to elect a new Master General.

See the link below for the website which will keep everyone updated. The Chapter will be held in Rome this year. It was scheduled for India, but it became too dangerous to hold it there. It begins on Tuesday, August 31st and ends on Tuesday, September 21st. An important date to remember in prayers is September 5th on which the Chapter will elect our new Master General.

Istvan Szonyi, Assumption of Mary, 1945

From Sirach Chapter 24:
Thus in the chosen city he has given me rest, in Jerusalem is my domain.
I have struck root among the glorious people, in the portion of the LORD, his heritage.
"Like a cedar on Lebanon I am raised aloft, like a cypress on Mount Hermon,
Like a palm tree in En-gedi, like a rosebush in Jericho, Like a fair olive tree in the field, like a plane tree growing beside the water.
Like cinnamon, or fragrant balm, or precious myrrh, I give forth perfume; Like galbanum and onycha and sweet spices, like the odor of incense in the holy place.
I spread out my branches like a terebinth, my branches so bright and so graceful.
I bud forth delights like the vine, my blossoms become fruit fair and rich.
Come to me, all you that yearn for me, and be filled with my fruits;
You will remember me as sweeter than honey, better to have than the honeycomb.
He who eats of me will hunger still, he who drinks of me will thirst for more;
He who obeys me will not be put to shame, he who serves me will never fail."

Happy Feast of the Assumption

Br. Emmanuel's Solemn Vows - McKenzie Bridge

On the feast of St. Dominic, August 8, 2010, Br. Emmanuel took his solemn vows in the Dominican Order. These are the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and Br. Emmanuel has vowed them until death. This is equivalent to marriage vows. Solemn vows also allow Br. Emmanuel to vote in community. In two more years Br. Emmanuel will be ordained a priest. It was also a great party to wish him well, since he will be going to study for a year in Kenya. His family included mother and father, Donna and Bill, brother Paul and sisters, Mary and Beth with Beth's husband Aaron and their son Luca. After Mass we enjoyed a wonderful feast provided by parishioners of St. Benedict's Lodge and fun water activities. We wish Br. Emmanuel the best as he tests out his missionary charism in Africa and learns deeply how to preach through word and deed. Thanks to Chris Inglis for the first shot of Emmanuel's solemn vows.

Newman camping at Sunset Bay

What a great way of spending the summer with community. Our camping trip included swimming, kayaking thanks to Mario, exploring tidal pools, a generous buffet of camping food, and a great Sunday Mass at the camp ground. We look forward to doing this again.
