Fall Retreat 2010
Welcome!
Your mission at the St. Thomas More Newman Center is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ expressed in the Roman Catholic intellectual and spiritual tradition into dialogue with the academic community at the University of Oregon through the evangelization and religious formation of the Catholic students, faculty, staff and administrators. You are the people affiliated with the University and local community members who support the mission of Catholic campus ministry.
Things are pretty quiet around the Newman Center this week, with all the priests of the Western Dominican Province gathered in the bay area for the ordination. I thought it might be fun to post a photo or two of student events of the past school year.
This was taken at the Coffeehouse where the theme was AQUA - anything to do with water!
if you haven't seen A Man For All Seasons, a 1966 film with a stellar cast, I highly recommend it. It wonderfully portrays Thomas More, a man who stood up for his beliefs. (Looks like the entire film can be found on YouTube. But you didn't hear that from me...)
Late in the day on Monday (Graduation Day at U of O) some unexpected guests dropped by Newman Center. They were mighty comfortable and were not distracted in the least by the graduates and their families celebrating nearby!
A great time was had by all. Rain, sun, and a little wind at the end made their appearance throughout the picnic. We had a wonderful sides and desserts, and the Knight of Columbus grilled up some great hot dogs and hamburgers and veggie burgers. Whiffle ball created quite a stir at the beginning with Marcus Harvey on the student side diving for a long high one and catching it. Of course, the balloon toss ended with mayhem. 2010 was a great year at the Newman Center. We look forward to the new school year.
We are really looking forward to the parish picnic this Sunday from 12:30-3. Bring your friends. Burgers and Hot Dogs provided. Please bring your favorite side dish or dessert. Here is the forecast for the weather (20% chance of rain). Please bring your own chairs and blankets.
Bring your game, because we are playing a good old fashioned game of whiffle ball, Students versus Old-timers. Then revenge is sweet with a little water balloon action (unless that 20% chance of showers starts in).
